Say hello to Felicia, or HiF3licia, if you are one of the hundreds of thousands who follow her on Instagram or on her YouTube channel. Felicia is a self-professed “Curl Reviver & Enthusiast,” whose goal is to help her #curlfriends love their #naturalcurls. I mean, check out her curls—how could you not love such gorgeous locks? And the color’s stunning, as well. Felicia used to use Color Reviving Gloss in Amaretto to keep her curls rich, but now that she has highlights, she uses Crema to keep her hair shiny and healthy-looking.

We talked to Felicia about her hair journey, from a history of resisting with relaxers to relaxing into loving her curls...

Tell us about your hair story...have you always embraced your curls? What other hair styles have you tried? Loved or hated?
I’ve always wanted to embrace my curls but I never knew what to do with them, so for many years I would get relaxers, keep my hair pulled back tight and just hide them.  I never felt comfortable because I always felt like I was hiding a piece of myself though.

What are your top tips for taking care of curly hair? Any hair hacks for curly hair?
My top tricks for curly hair care are...

Felicia's Top Tricks for Curly Hair Care

  • Never over-shampoo your hair
  • Co-washing (conditioner-only washing) should be your best friend
  • Avoid heat
  • Avoid tight hairstyles
  • Only detangle when your hair is wet
  • Treat your hair like a delicate piece of fabric! Be gentle when cleansing and detangling, and make sure you preserve your hair at night with a silk pillowcase or scarf!

Do you take care of your hair differently depending on the season? The weather?
Definitely in the warmer months I find myself wetting my hair more often and trying to find products that will also protect from the sun. I deep condition more with moisturizing products and I like to pre-poo before cleansing my hair with an oil mixture usually containing all of oil or coconut oil in my favorite essential oils! This helps keep my hair from drying out especially my highlights!

What is your favorite thing about having curly hair?
My favorite thing about having curly hair is that my curls are like a permanent accessory!! I like that I can play around with them and have them super defined, or I can fluff them out and have big hair that makes people stare!

What are your challenges with curly hair?
Sometimes it's hard to find the perfect balance of products, and sometimes our environment can affect our Curls! Until you can figure your curls out, they can be a little difficult and it's not always easy to find the perfect combination of products. Curls also used to be looked at in the professional industry as unprofessional, and many curlies have experienced curl hate.

What does beauty mean to you?
To me beauty is truly on the inside--if you are happy then that beauty will radiate and spread to others!!

What makes you feel beautiful?
Having a great hair day definitely makes me feel beautiful but knowing that I'm doing everything I can to take care of my Curls and myself makes me feel beautiful every day!

What does your hair say about your personality?
My curls are as wild and free as me!!

How does a good hair day make you feel?
A good hair day makes me feel on top of the world. You definitely feel more confident and want to get everything accomplished!

What does a bad hair day look like for you?
I try to embrace all hair days, so if my curls are acting up, I just clip up the Curls that don't look how I want or I like to just embrace the frizz!!

Hair up or hair down?
I love my hair down!

If you could try one hairstyle for a day without any commitment to keeping it, what would it be?
I have always wanted lavender Curls!!

Stay tuned to Felicia’s Instagram and YouTube channel to see if she ever takes the leap to lavender. One thing’s for sure--no matter the color, her curls are sure to be gorgeous.
