Hello, beautiful!

A Hair Color Chart to Get Glamorous Results at Home

When searching for your perfect shade you need to know the basics to at home hair coloring. Hair has several properties that need to be considered when looking for your signature shade. The basics being level and tone. Ever wonder what the number and letter stand for on your hair color box, or the formula your stylist is reluctant to hand over? Both are related to level, and tone. Below is a brief guide on how to find your signature shade without all the emergency trips to the salon or damage to your hair. You’ll be an at-home colorist in no time by using our hair color chart.

When coloring hair it is important to consider both natural tone, and artificial tone. Black and brown pigments are responsible for level, and yellow and red tones are more responsible for underlying tone. Every natural color is a combination of these 4 tones. Permanent color works by opening the cuticle to remove natural color pigment and replaces it with artificial pigments. Tones are represented in hair color formulas by a letter, ie V for Violet, G for Gold, A for Ash, etc. Warm tones neutralize cool tones, and cool tones neutralize warm tones. When going lighter and during the lifting process warm tones are naturally exposed, using a cool tone to go lighter will help result in more neutral results.

Madison Reed’s Radiant Color Cream ranges from levels 2-10. From darkest to lightest. 2 being the darkest at black and 10 being a light blonde, and everything in between. After figuring out your natural level, vs your current (possibly colored level) take note as this can determine what would be best for you! One important thing to consider is once hair has been permanently colored you can not use a lighter hair color for a lighter effect. Madison Reed’s gentle formula can lift 1-2 levels on natural, un-dyed hair, and about half of a level on pre-colored hair. You need to know the your limits, and permanent hair color limits on what can be achieved at home! Highlights, balayage and Ombres are something that may require harsher chemicals such as bleach, and specific application techniques difficult to achieve at home. Set yourself up to succeed and get brilliant results with our hair color chart below.
