Behind the scenes at Madison Reed, there’s a team of talented, creative people who make working here a pure joy. Meet Tana, a former punk rocker turned classically trained stylist who gives her full attention to serving unique hair needs with personalized solutions.
Hey Tana, how did you start working with beauty and hair?
Right before high school, I got into the punk rocker scene. Hair fashion in the ‘80s was about a lot of hairspray, mohawks... very involved looks. I liked creating those looks, so I went to a hair academy.
What do you specialize in?
In the academy, I was a barber because I loved the precision of short hair. I learned all of the classic cuts, the scissor over comb technique, and more edgy styles that involved leaving out really long pieces.
These days, I like to work with people’s natural style. Understanding what their hair needs and what’s going to work with it so they don’t always need to spend a lot of time on it.
We love giving that personal touch! What gets you excited about Madison Reed?
We’re empowering everybody to color hair at home, and they can still go to the salon when they want to. It leaves hair in better shape than if they “cheated” with a box from the drugstore.
There are women who try Madison Reed because their hairdresser moved or go on maternity leave. They miss the relationship with someone who understands them and their hair. I love having in-depth conversations and being able to give that connection.
We’re not just talking about our hair. It’s something that connects to how you’re feeling. I say things like, “Don’t worry, we’re going to get you to your daughter’s graduation” all the time. I know how serious it is.
Do you have a favorite customer experience?
There was one conversation where I worked with a women through her hair issues, found great solutions, and talked a little about her life. It was so awesome that she said, “I love you, bye!” at the end. I almost said, “I love you, too!”
I love the fact that we actually hire stylists to be here to support our customers like clients. We really talk and work through things with them. I’m happy every day that I talk to people on the phone. It’s a unique experience, and it’s brilliant.
That’s incredible, thank you for sharing that. On to some fun stuff. Do you have any guilty hair pleasures?
Maybe it’s my punk rock roots, but I have no allegiance to anything. I could come in here with my head shaved one day.
Does that mean you’ve shaved your head before?
Yup, with a ¼” guard.
On the flip side, what’s the longest your hair’s ever been?
If you won the lotto, what’s the first thing you would do?
Buy property in Mexico and surf all day.
What’s something embarrassing that you totally don’t want your team or the world to know? TELL US :)
No! Nothing embarrasses me.
What’s your favorite food?
Sushi. I love butterfish sashimi. It tastes like really white fatty tuna.
Do you have a favorite place you’ve traveled?
Turkey. It was so beautiful there, and the culture was really rich.
Do you have pets or children?
I have an 11-year-old daughter named Jade, 3 dogs, a crested gecko, and fish.
Wow, no wonder you’re such a good caretaker. Want to leave us with a hair care tip?
Avoid heat styling as much as possible. Keeping it natural will help maintain the integrity of your hair.
