live life brilliantly

We’re shining a spotlight on phenomenal women who are making it happen in their lives, at home, and in their careers.

Emily Wines

Master Sommelier
Hometown: Oakland
Hair Color: Genova Red 7NCG

Most people can’t resist remarking on Emily Wines’ last name and her prestigious title as Master Sommelier. It may be serendipitous, but it was nothing but hard work, grit, unswerving dedication, and passion that earned her that distinction. Wines, who worked her way up as a server, passed all three parts of the exam on her first try, to become one of only 135 professionals in the world, who can call themselves Master Sommelier. When she’s not directing the beverage program for Kimpton Hotels and taking her staff wine tasting in Tuscany, here are some of her favorite ways to spend her free time. Champagne is part of the balance, of course.

Favorite Movie: The Princess Bride

Favorite Music: Just about anything that has a good beat, but I tend to prefer world music

Favorite Author: Margaret Atwood

Inspiring Museum: Museum of Natural History in Washington DC

Favorite Journey: Driving down the Pacific Coast, especially down to Santa Barbara

Favorite Food: Cheese! All day. Every day.

Favorite Drink: Champagne. All day. Every day.

Favorite Designer: Louis Vuitton. So much more than just bags.

Hair-styling Trick: It’s all about product. For every half inch of growth I have a different one. Pomade when I want a pompadour. A curl mousse is very effective at giving me clean, glossy curls when I want to go that route.

Swear-by Beauty Habit: Avoid the sun! It’s hard being fair.

Morning Routine: A three-mile sunrise walk every day with my wife, Terri, and our two dogs, Reuben and Gulliver.

Beauty Mantra: The secret to pulling off any look is to own it with confidence

Tip from Mom: Sing “These Boots Are Made for Walking” when headed into any situation where I need to perform

Signature Scent: None! As a sommelier I never wear perfume and the habit stuck

Favorite Lip Shade: That depends- these days I am going bold. Deep wine colored lips are my thing this week.

Favorite Mascara: Anything that can make my fine lashes look longer and thicker gets my vote! My lash secret is Lancome Booster XL super enhancing mascara base. It is a creamy, white mascara with fibers in it that makes my lashes look long and thick. I then top that with Benefit Bad Gal.

Favorite Nail Polish Color: pewter

Beauty Traveling Tip: I always keep a mini jar of Vaseline with me on the road. It is perfect for dry lips and hands and can save  your dry nose in a long flight!

Favorite Anti-aging Product: It’s all about moisturizing. I have used Oil of Olay face cream for the last decade on a religious level

Always in your beauty bag: Face powder and lipstick

Instant Mood Lifter: A cheerful visit from my French Bulldog, Gulliver!

R&R: Gardening while listening to audio books is the perfect battery recharger for me!

Most Recent Milestone: I just turned 40 and I’m loving it!

Best Career Advice: If you are unhappy with your job then you need to quit. There is no excuse for work misery!

Your Greatest Achievement: Passing the Master Sommelier Exam on my first try

Words to Live by: Be the change that you want to see in the world.
