Many of Madison Reed’s models are real women who use our products. Jami, our model for Canella Gloss, discovered us after a harrowing salon experience and hasn’t looked back since. Read on for her full story.

Hi Jami, tell us a little about yourself.
I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner, which is like a therapist. I diagnose, give therapy, and prescribe medication to people of all ages, from little kids to adults. I had been a registered nurse for 16 or 17 years and went back to school for my masters degree. After taking one class, I fell in love with it. It made me realize that what I really enjoy about taking care of people is the support and counseling aspect.

And now we get to take care of you! Well, your hair at least. What was your experience with hair color before Madison Reed?
I can remember the first time I colored my hair. I was in 8th grade and felt that I could never have cute hair styles because my hair is very curly. But I could have every color you could imagine! Purple, pink, black, blonde highlight, shades of brown, auburn, mahogany… I have literally never had my own hair color since I was 14.

After trying various shades of red, I decided I was supposed to be a redhead. I have the personality and traits of a natural redhead; I was just born with the wrong hair color!

It’s so true. We hear from a lot of women about how much hair color affects their life. So how was your hair feeling about all these changes?
There have been good times and bad times. I have definitely had very over-processed, dry, brittle hair.

Right before I switched to Madison Reed, I had been going to the same hairdresser for about 10 years. I was never happy with my hair. The texture was terrible. I was unhappy with how my curls lay, and my color was never as bright and consistent as I wanted.

The last time I went, a lot of my hair fell out and became like a Brillo pad of hair stuck on back of my hair. I was horrified. How could this happen? There was no apology, no empathy. I just got “Oh wow, that sucks, let’s cut your hair off.”

I went from a horrifying experience with my hair to the best I've felt in my life.

Wait, what happened??
My stylist did an all-over color. When she was shampooing it out, she was aggressively scrubbing the hair. Because of the curls, she was pushing it down into the ends and not seeing that it was falling out. So she kept pushing and turning my hair into a giant knot.

They would’ve had to cut 8 inches out if they just cut it out. I’ve been growing it out for years and there was no way I was letting them take scissors to it. They took a fine tooth comb and brushed it out for hours. I ended up with all this broken hair.

Why did your hair fall out like that?
It must have been caused by whatever chemicals they put in the color. It was a weird circumstantial thing. Nobody wanted that to happen, but I’m never going back.

How did this lead you to Madison Reed?
When my friend heard my story, she told me that Madison Reed products could really help me. Within weeks of using Madison Reed, the entire condition of my hair improved. I have hair that’s not dry for the first time. It’s growing out well, and the texture of my curls improved and I gained 3 inches of growth.

For me, it’s been very dramatic. I went from a horrifying experience with my hair to the best I’ve felt in my adult life.

What do you use?
I tried Radiant Color first. We only put the permanent color on the roots and used gloss on the ends. The second time I used the hair care. (Jami’s full regimen is listed below!)

What I really notice is that it’s not over-processing the dry parts. The quality of the products and the way they all work together make a big difference in my hair.

That’s incredible. How does it make you feel?
I feel prettier. I was always just pulling my hair back in bun or twist. Now I wear it loose a lot more. I’m getting compliments about my color all the time.

“What are you doing to your hair? It looks so nice!”
“I can’t get my hair to look like that. How do you get that look?”

My 4 sisters are all jealous of how my hair has turned out. One of them has purchased Madison Reed online. She’s going to be a convert!

It’s also a lot easier. I used to wake up with a head of hair that had to be styled. Now I can sleep on wet hair and wake up looking great. When you have a 1- and 3-year-old, being able to get up and go is a huge bonus!

What an inspiring experience! Thank you for sharing your story, Jami.

Jami’s Hair Color Regimen
Susan Roberts-Cooper, our Director of Research & Development, designed Jami’s hair color regimen by taking her hair type, condition, and preferences into account:

Jami has naturally curly hair. Natural color is a light brown with one or two gray hairs. Hair is quite fine in texture but looks substantial, since it’s curly.

Jami likes her hair bright, so I used Vesuvius Red – 7NCR, which is our most vibrant red. This lightens the natural color, exposing the natural red in Jami’s hair, and then adds vibrant copper red tones. The result is a vibrant copper.

The very ends of Jami’s hair were light, so I refreshed with Color Reviving Gloss in Canella to make the whole a vibrant copper, a wonderful contrast with her green eyes.

This combination of permanent color and semi-permanent gloss gives an even color from roots to ends and keeps hair glossy and shiny—especially important for curly hair, since it tends not to look shiny easily.
