Finding Your Perfect Shade

How do I find my perfect shade?

Take our Color Quiz to help you find your perfect shade. The Color Quiz is our proprietary online tool that asks you a series of questions about your current hair color and what you are looking to accomplish with our products to help determine the products that will work best for you. If you have any questions, please contact the professional stylists on our Color Crew for recommendations. Just call 1.855.742.5916 or chat now

What is the Madi Chatbot?

Madi is our genius new hair color Chatbot. This revolutionary, high-touch experience begins with a simple selfie. Just upload a photo, and using the science of image recognition and hair localization, Madi analyzes the photo and identifies your primary hair color, plus the nuance of secondary tones. In true salon-experience form, Madi asks her clients a few simple questions to learn more about their hair and their desired outcome, and suggests the perfect color, along with a few options that would also work well with your hair. There are two ways to chat with Madi: text "hello" to 62824 (MATCH), or open Facebook Messenger’s mobile app, search for Madison Reed, and select "Get Started."

What if I already color with a different brand and want to match that shade?

If you already color your hair at home and are happy with the color, the Color Translator can help you find the Madison Reed shade that is best for you based on your current at-home hair color brand and shade.

How do I determine my current hair color?

  1. Examine your hair in a place with soft, indirect sunlight.
  2. Identify your color-family — Blonde, Brunette, Black or Red.
  3. Select the level that most closely resembles your color.

If you are still having trouble identifying your current hair color, send your photo to the professional stylists on our Color Crew.

How to take the best possible photos for our colorists to analyze:

  1. Stand facing forward, not at an angle.
  2. Stand in front of a plain background. A white wall works best.
  3. Your photo should be well lit, ideally outside in daylight or under soft, indirect light.
  4. We would love to have two photos: one of the top/roots of your hair and the other the side of your head showing your hair.

Before You Color

How often can I color my hair?

We recommend you wait at least two weeks between permanent hair color applications.

Should I wash my hair before coloring?

No. For best results, wait at least 24 hours after washing your hair before coloring. If you have styling product such as mousse or gel in your hair, comb it through before coloring to remove any excess product. If you use a wax-based product it needs to be removed before you color because it could prevent the color from absorbing into your hair. Shampoo the product out and wait for 24 hours before coloring.

Should I perform an allergy test (patch test)?

We always recommend you do a sensitivity test before coloring your hair. At least 48 hours beforehand, mix 1 part Radiant Cream Color (a small squeeze) with 1.5 parts Conditioning Color Activator (a few drops). Use a cotton swab to apply a quarter-sized amount to a small patch of skin behind your ear or inside your elbow. Keep dry. Wait 48 hours. If there is no sign of change to the area, then you’re ready to color. Always consult your physician if you have questions or concerns.

How long does the permanent hair color last? (opened/unopened)

Madison Reed Radiant Cream Color can be kept for 3 years if unopened and 1 year if opened and resealed. However, if the Radiant Cream Color and Conditioning Color Activator have been mixed, they should be discarded after the standard processing time listed in the instructions.

What should I do 24 - 48 hours before coloring?

We always recommend you do a sensitivity test before coloring your hair 48 hours before coloring. 24 hours in advance, wash your hair. The day after you shampoo is the best for coloring. Make sure you have everything you need. We recommend: an old towel (just in-case) , hair clips or ties (helpful for sectioning), wide-tooth comb (to pull color through) , old button down shirt or smock (a nice security measure against any mess). See our accessories here.

Applying Your Color

How do I apply Madison Reed hair color?

We've made the color application process simple:

  • Read through the instructions that came with the box. A copy of the instructions is always available in the Account section of the Madison Reed website, under "Product Instructions".
  • Watch our tutorial videos for pro tips and tricks to applying your color.

I lost the instructions that were included in my box, what do I do?

The best place to find instructions specific to the color you ordered is in your order delivery email. But in case you can’t track that down, here is a helpful link to our general instructions, plus a link to helpful video tutorials.

How do I section my hair?

Before you begin coloring, divide your hair into four sections. Start by parting your hair down the center. Then split each half with an additional part line that runs across the top of your head from the top of one ear to the top of the other ear. Use clips to hold these sections in place as you color each section. If you do not have clips, you can buy a set of professional color clips in the Madison Reed accessories section of our site. Watch any of our instruction videos for additional information.

Should I color the entire length of my hair each time?

Your best application will depend on how often you color your hair and if you are using the same shade as your currently color treated hair. Follow the instructions included in your kit or see additional information in our tutorial videos section to decide which application is right for you. Learn more about how to avoid some common permanent color issues here. If you are just touching up your roots, you can use the Madison Reed Color Reviving Gloss to refresh tone and shine on the lengths and ends of your hair.

How do I color the back of my hair?

Madison Reed hair color comes in a bottle with a helpful nozzle tip designed to easily separate your hair into smaller sections in the areas that you cannot see as you color. Use the nozzle to create small 1/4th" rows, one section at a time. Use plenty of product to make sure you are fully saturating your roots for full coverage. You should use about half the bottle on your roots. Once you have finished applying, go back and massage the color into your roots one last time before moving onto the next step in the instructions.

When do I start timing?

You should begin the timer once you have completed the full application as described in the instructions.

What happens if I leave in Madison Reed hair color for too long?

If you leave the color on for too long, this may result in a hair color that is darker than anticipated. Make sure to read all instructions carefully before beginning the application process.

What happens if I rinse Madison Reed hair color out earlier than instructed?

Make sure to follow all instructions carefully. If you rinse out the color before the instructed time, you may not achieve your desired hair color and grays may not be completely covered.

How do I treat color-resistant gray hair?

Here are a few tips from our professional stylists on what to do if your gray hair is unusually resistant to hair coloring: When you begin the color application process, first apply the color to the areas where your hair may be most difficult to color. This is usually at the front hairline and at the natural part in your hair. Make sure you completely saturate your hair with color. You should use at least half of the contents of the bottle on your roots. If you have very thick or long hair, consider ordering a second tube of color to ensure you have enough for your mid-lengths and ends. When you finish your application, go back to your resistant areas and put even more color on the color-resistant areas. Give your hair a little more time to absorb the color. An extra 5 - 10 minutes should do the trick. Use your gloved fingers to massage the color into your roots.

Will it stain my sink and towels?

Madison Reed Radiant Cream Color is a permanent color formula, and for this reason can cause staining on porous surfaces and towels. If the formula comes in contact with your sink, countertops, or floors, wipe it away immediately. Make sure that your water rinses clear before washing your hair after coloring. Avoid using light colored towels for the first few shampoos.

After You Color

Once I'm finished coloring, how do I protect my hair and make my color last?

Protect and fortify your hair color with Madison Reed Nourishing Color Enhancing Shampoo and Conditioner. Also, use cool water to shampoo and condition your hair, and limit the amount of time you spend in direct sunlight and in chlorinated water.

Is it normal to see some color tinting my shampoo when I wash 24 – 48 hours later?

Madison Reed hair color has been formulated to lock in color, but it's normal to see some residual color in your shampoo, particularly if you've colored your hair with a dark or red shade.

About Color Reviving Gloss

Can I use Gloss if I don’t have color treated hair?

Color Reviving Gloss was designed to work best on color-treated hair. It refreshes lost tone on the mid-lengths and ends, while coloring your roots with permanent color.

Can I use Color Reviving Gloss on mostly white or gray hair?

It is not recommended to use Color Reviving Gloss on hair that is white or non-pigmented because Color Reviving Gloss refreshes tone only and does not give a desired result on white or gray.

Will Color Reviving Gloss Cover my gray roots?

Color Reviving Gloss will not offer any gray coverage.

What about using Color Reviving Gloss over blonde highlights?

Crema and Prosecco are ideal to be used on highlighted or lightened hair to change tone, add color and add shine to blondes. Color Reviving Gloss will only work on the highlighted or lightened areas of the hair; Crema will neutralize unwanted yellow brassy tones to give a clean shiny result: Prosecco will add soft champagne gold tones to the highlighted or lightened areas.

How long does Color Reviving Gloss last?

Color Reviving Gloss typically lasts 8-12 shampoos. Longevity depends on several factors: the condition of the hair, the shade used (darker colors last longer), frequency of shampooing, time in contact with hair, and amount of product used (more product means more saturation of color and a longer lasting result).

How much product should I use per application?

For best results, apply gloss to dry hair and continue applying product until the hair is fully saturated. For shoulder length hair, most customers get two applications per tube.

Can I use Color Reviving Gloss to help correct color mistakes?

Yes – gloss can be the perfect solution to correct many common color problems, such as using Crema or Espresso to diminish unwanted warmth or brassiness. Color Reviving Gloss will not remove or lighten your color. If you are unhappy with the result of your permanent color and would like to correct it, we recommending contacting our Color Crew for a consultation and guidance with the right gloss shade.

Can I use Color Reviving Gloss together with Madison Reed Radiant Cream Color?

Yes, you can use gloss to restore your color on lengths and ends while coloring roots with our permanent color. Color roots first with Radiant Cream Color then immediately apply Color Reviving Gloss directly to lengths and ends of hair from the tube – no mixing required. Apply a small amount of Gloss and work into the hair then move onto the next section. Application is quick and easy – set the timer for 35 minutes.

Will Color Reviving Gloss condition my hair?

Color Reviving Gloss is intended to enhance and extend the vibrancy of color-treated hair and add shine. For hair that feels extra soft and silky, we recommend regular use of Madison Reed Color Protecting shampoo and Conditioner.

About Root Reboot

How long will Root Reboot last?

Root Reboot is not designed to replace permanent color. It is designed to be a fast, easy fix to temporarily cover gray roots—saving time and energy. Washed every day or every other day, it will last an average of 2 weeks. Washing less frequently will mean color lasts longer. Root Reboot will wash away gradually. Every time you shampoo, a little color washes out.

What happens if I leave Root Reboot on my hair for longer than the 10 minute processing time?

If Root Reboot is left on hair for more than 10 minutes, the color will deposit more pigment and the shade may appear darker than the target shade.

Can Root Reboot be colored over with permanent color?

You can safely use permanent color over hair that has been colored with Root Reboot, without changing the expected results of the permanent color.

How soon after using Root Reboot can I apply permanent color?

If desired, permanent color can be used over Root Reboot the same day without any negative effects, and with no fear of the color being darker than expected.

Can I use Color Reviving Gloss and Root Reboot together?

Yes. You can use Root Reboot to camouflage your roots and Color Reviving Gloss to refresh the lengths and ends of your hair. However, due to the different processing times of each product, we do not recommend you use Root Reboot and Color Reviving Gloss at the same time.

Can I use Root Reboot to lighten my roots?

No. Root Reboot is designed to deposit color only and cannot lighten your natural or color-treated hair. If your roots are darker than your color-treated hair, we recommend using Root Touch Up for a temporary solution, or using Radiant Cream Color to permanently lighten your roots up to two levels.

Can I use Root Reboot if my hair is 100% white?

Yes. Root Reboot is designed to blend gray, rather than cover like permanent color, so Root Reboot will make your regrowth line much less obvious. Root Reboot helps camouflage that line and buy time between permanent color applications. For maximum color deposit on 100% gray or white hair, you can either leave the color on for an extra 5 minutes or choose a shade darker than your typical permanent color.

Can I use Root Reboot as a replacement for permanent color?

We do not recommend using just Root Reboot to color hair. Root Reboot is designed to fade out gradually with each wash. If Root Reboot is used alone, without permanent color, the ends of your hair will eventually become more faded than the rest of your hair as it grows out. Root Reboot is ideal for covering gray between permanent hair color applications.

About Root Touch Up

Can I use Root Touch Up to add color to natural hair?

Yes, Root Touch Up can be used over hair that is colored or natural. It is designed to be used through the roots of the hair rather than the lengths and ends. If using on natural hair and shading out gray, using hairspray will help Root Touch Up stay on the hair. Just apply the Root Touch Up and then spray lightly afterwards.

Can I use Root Touch Up to put temporary highlights and lowlights in bleached or blonde hair?

Yes, our Blonde Duo (Pinoli + Cascata) is perfect for creating highlights and lowlights at the root to help blend away dark roots for those with lighter color-treated hair.

What is the difference between Root Touch Up and Root Reboot?

Root Reboot is a longer-lasting demi-permanent gray coverage solution that will last up to two weeks. Whereas, Root Touch Up is designed as a quick fix that will last 1-2 days, and is sweat, rain and pillow proof, and washes out with your next shampoo. They go hand in hand. We recommend starting with Root Reboot, and touch up with Root Touch Up if grays do appear a few days before your next color appointment.

I love Root Touch Up, but how can I make it last longer?

While Root Touch Up is rain, sweat, and pillow-proof, it is designed to be used as a temporary gray coverage tool and will wash out with your next shampoo. If you’re looking for a longer-lasting solution, we recommend our demi-permanent Root Reboot, which will cover gray roots for 2 weeks. You can still use Root Touch Up to cover any stray grays or to match brow color.

Is Root Touch Up Powder safe to use on my eyebrows?

Yes, it’s perfectly safe to use on brows. Our Root Touch Up is formulated to be dust free -- which means it is a micro-milled powder pressed with water and waxes so that it will adhere to eyebrow hair. We sell a fantastic Madison Reed brow brush for easy, beautiful application.

Why does Root Touch Up contain Talc?

Talc is used in our Root Touch Up because it is a very effective ingredient to cover gray and dark hair, and makes it easy to apply. Madison Reed uses only cosmetic-grade, non-respirable talc, which is free from asbestos, and safe to use.

About Prime for Perfection

What is Prime for Perfection?

Prime for Perfection is the essential pre-color prep step for perfect hair color. It works as a primer for your hair, removing excess buildup that causes color to look dull or too dark. Prime for Perfection is formulated without ammonia, bleach, peroxide, parabens, phthalates and gluten. Our gentle hair-loving formula creates a smooth base so your hair can optimally receive new color for hair that looks and feels healthier, fresh, and downright fabulous.

How does Prime for Perfection work?

Prime for Perfection penetrates the hair cuticle to reduce and remove previous permanent artificial color. The color build up washes away to reveal the underlying color, providing an optimal base for the next permanent color application.

Will Prime for Perfection lighten natural hair?

Natural pigment in hair can only be removed by a process called oxidation. Prime for Perfection does not involve an oxidation process; therefore, it cannot remove or lighten natural pigment.

Will Prime for Perfection remove all permanent color molecules?

In most instances, Prime for Perfection will remove most permanent color molecules in the hair with one application. However, if hair has been colored dark repeatedly and has a lot of permanent color molecules, it may need multiple applications of Prime for Perfection, lightening gradually with each use.

Can I use Prime for Perfection more than once in a sitting? How many times can I reapply?

For most, a single application of Prime for Perfection is enough to removed the desired amount of permanent color before applying hair color. However, Prime for Perfection can be used several times consecutively to remove the desired amount of permanent color. A maximum of 4 applications is recommended.

Will Prime for Perfection return hair to its natural color?

No. When permanent color is applied to hair, it lightens natural pigment prior to depositing artificial pigment. Therefore, when the artificial pigment is removed by Prime for Perfection, the underlying color revealed is often lighter and warmer, or more golden in tone than the initial natural hair color.

Do I have to color my hair after using Prime for Perfection?

We recommend always being prepared to apply permanent color after using Prime for Perfection as the underlying hair color from using Prime for Perfection may be uneven and warmer or more golden in tone than desired prior to coloring.

Can I use permanent color directly after using Prime for Perfection? Do I have to do anything special with the application or timing?

Yes, you can apply permanent color immediately following an application of Prime for Perfection. Make sure hair is clean and dry, and all Prime for Perfection has been washed out. Then simply follow the normal directions for applying permanent color.

Can I use Color Reviving Gloss directly after using Prime for Perfection?

Yes, Color Reviving Gloss can be used.

How much will Prime for Perfection lighten my hair?

You can expect to see hair color lift 1- 1 ½ levels from one application, depending on how many times hair has been previously colored.

When should I use Prime for Perfection?

Prime for Perfection can be used for the following reasons:

  • To prepare hair for permanent color by removing previous color and evening out the surface of the hair so color can take evenly and predictably.
  • To remove permanent color buildup from darker areas, typically ends of hair and front hairline as a result of previous color applications.
  • When changing color from a brunette shade to a red shade.
  • When changing color from a red shade to a brunette shade.

I used Prime for Perfection and it lightened the middle part of my hair but didn’t lighten the ends. Why?

This can happen if hair is longer and has been colored repeatedly, allowing the color to build up on the ends. You may need more than one application to remove all the permanent color at the ends. Simply reapply to the darker areas only and the hair should lighten.

Will using Prime for Perfection before I color my hair make my permanent color fade faster?

No. Color fade happens when hair is very porous, meaning the cuticle is open and can release color pigments. Prime for Perfection closes the cuticle as it processes and therefore improves the porosity of hair to help prevent color fade.

Can I mix Prime for Perfection with Radiant Cream Color or Color Reviving Gloss to make it lighter?

No. Prime for Perfection should never be mixed with other products. Prime for Perfection should be applied first according to the application instructions, followed by Radiant Cream Color or Color Reviving Gloss.

How many applications are in a single tube of Prime for Perfection?

A single tube is enough for a full application for most people with shoulder length hair. If there is still Prime for Perfection in the tube after a full application, it can be saved for a second application.
